What to do in Case of an Electrical Fire!

If a fire breaks out in your home, your first instinct might be to pour water on it. Well, in many cases, your instincts would be correct…but not in the case of electrical fires.

Instead, here’s what to do any time a fire breaks out involving electrical equipment, appliances, cords, outlets, and the like.

Never use water to fight an electrical fire.
Water conducts electricity and you could receive a bad shock. If the flames are small, use baking soda or a fire extinguisher approved for Class C (electrical) fires.

If smoke or flames are coming from an appliance, don't touch the appliance.
Unplug it or go to the main circuit breaker and turn off all power to the house. If the smoke or flames don't die out, try using an approved Class C fire extinguisher.

If you can't put out a fire immediately, get out of the house.
Don't wait for a fire to get out of control and trap you. Get out and go to a neighbor's house or use a cell phone to call 9-1-1 and summon the fire department. Stay out and wait for help to arrive.
